Bar Height Dining Chairs
How to choose the right bar stool height
Choosing the right bar stool size for your home is confusing. With so many different variations in breakfast bar, counter tops and bar heights the correct height stool is important. Choose the wrong size stools and you could be sat too low or having to slouch if too high. Neither of these options would be comfortable. In this guide we will explain how to choose the right stool size; covering height, width, depth and distance from the counter.
How do I measure my stool?
We measure our bar stools in a number of ways. We try to include every measurement you may need to ensure your new stools are the perfect fit. The main measurements you will be interested when checking your stool against your counter top is the Height and the seat height. You may also want to check the arm rest height if your stool has these. Most customers want their stool to fit snug under their counter top when not in use.
Which stool height do you need?
When looking into purchasing a new bar chair, you need to leave around 30cm gap between the counter top and the chair seat, to allow a comfortable space for your legs.
There are three main bar stool heights to take into consideration:
Table Stool Height: Table tops are usually around 70 to 76cm tall, so you will need to look for a bar stool that ranges from 40 to 45cm tall.
Counter Stool Height: Counter tops in the UK are usually around 90 to 95cm, a perfect stool for this height would be one of our low bar stools, which range from 60 to 75cm.
Bar Stool Height: Bar Tops usually have a height of around 101 to 106cm so our high bar stools, which are 75cm and above would be a great addition to your area.
If you are still unsure on the height you will need, you may like to take a look at an adjustable bar stool. Adjustable stools are good for families as each stool can be adjusted for each member of the family.
- Measuring the Height of Stool Needed
Counter stools are most common in the home kitchen or breakfast area. They range between 58-72cm seat height. Bar Height stools are used at taller breakfast bar areas. These areas are usually raised above the standard kitchen worktop height. These stools tend the range between 74-82cm. Extra Tall models are commonly used commercially at bars and restaurants. These tend to have a seat height around 84-92cm Lastly an Adjustable Height Stool can usually range in height from 60-80cm. These are the most common style of stool on the market. The gas lift adjustment allows then to be used in a variety of roles.
- Legroom Space
You should aim to give 23-28cm for legroom. This will allow you to easily cross and move your legs without feeling trapped. Measure from the underside of the counter to the floor. Then subtract between 23-28cm. depending on the amount of room you require.
- Distance Between Stools
Another important factor to consider is how many barstools will comfortably fit at your kitchen island. The average seat width is about 42cm and if the stool has arms that would take it to around 55cm width. You should also try to leave 15cm space between each stool. This allows room to turn, each and drink comfortable at the kitchen bar.
- Choosing the Depth and Backrest Height
One last thing to consider is the depth of the stool. The depth and backrest go hand in hand as a big backrest will add to the overall depth to the stool. The average stool depth is around 40cm. If you add a backrest to this you can add anywhere between 5 and 12cm. Consider your space and the traffic around where the barstools will be placed. If your kitchen space is limited consider going for a backless option. This will give an appearance of space and can neatly tucked under the counter when not in use. A stool with a large backrest and possibly arms would need space.

After following the steps in the above guide, you will now be ready to shop. Choosing the right height bar stool for your kitchen, home or workspace will be easy.
